Staffordshire Pearlware Falstaff Figure

pre-Victorian, circa 1820. 9.1ins high, 4.7ins wide, 3.9ins depth. Staffordshire Pottery pearlware figure with a theatrical and literary theme which features Falstaff

holding a shield and a sword, stood on a square base.

Decorated 'in the round' - decoration to front and reverse.

Vent hole to the underside.

This piece represents Falstaff, the character from the Shakespearean comedy, 'The Merry Wives of Windsor'.

Maker's marks to the underside.

Condition

CONDITION: Generally good.

Two small chips to the base

and one to his tunic.

Chips to three of the flowers.

KILN EFFECTS: kiln soot caught in the glaze, mainly to the base;

touch mark to the base;

shrinkage crack to Falstaff's tunic and leg.

RESTORATION: Falstaff's right hand and the sword handle remodelled.

The sword is a replacement.

Retouched flake to his hat.
