
George III, dated 1791. 16ins high by 12ins wide. 1791 Sampler by Nancy Ritchie Greenock. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.
Stitched over a wood stretcher frame with canvas backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours greens, pale blue, light brown, white, black, gold and yellow. Family initials.
Verse reads
'Thus flide away the days of youth
in joys too pure to laft
Ah days of tranfport love and truth
neer valued till your paft'.
Signed and dated 'Nancy Ritchie Greenock 1791'.
A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a walled garden scene,
angels,
fruit baskets,
fir trees, crowns, urns, butterflies
and rabbits.
CONDITION: Good. No holes, just losses to the edge of bottom right corner.
Some very slight, light patchy staining to the top half.
Some stitch losses to the motifs.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
