Antique Sampler, 1806, by Sarah Lorment

George III, dated 1806. 16ins by 12.5ins high. 1806 Sampler by Sarah Lorment. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral strawberry border.

Colours greens, cream, red, yellow, white, black, blues and browns.

Inscription reads
'Virtue alone needs no Defence,

The surest Guard is Innocence.'.


Signed and dated 'Sarah Lorment Aged 14 Years 1806'.


A great set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a leaping dog and hare, a butterfly, a house with a garden, dogs, angels, stag, fir trees, the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk and birds.

CONDITION: Fair. A few holes and some loss of ground to the extreme edges.

Many stain specks and some patchy stains.

Minor stitch losses to the signature and inscription.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
