
George III, dated November 6th 1762. 19ins high by 8ins wide. Antique Sampler, 1762, by Elizabeth Lealman. Framed in a modern, gilt over wood, frame with glass.
Loose mounted with a chipboard backing.
There is a label from Amsterdam on the reverse of the frame, but we believe this to be an English sampler.
The sampler is worked in a silk-like thread on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.
Simple line border.
Colours browns, cream, gold, pink, greens and blues.
Alphabets A-Z in upper case, numbers 1-9, and family initials.
Inscription reads
'Lord Give Me Wis
dom To Direct My
Ways I Beg not Ric
hes nor Yet Length
of Days'.
Signed and dated
'This is the Work of Elizabeth Lealman In 14th Year Of her Age In the Year of Our Lord 1762 Novmber the 6'.
A few motifs including crowns, a bird, flowers,
potted flowering plant, fir tree, a dog and a heart.
CONDITION: Good. No holes.
Two stains.
Some stitch losses to the family initials at the bottom of the sampler.
Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading.
Neatly and evenly stretched.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang, the gilt has worn.
