Antique Scottish Sampler, 1768, by Elizabeth Harvie

George III, dated 1768. 15.25ins by 12.25ins wide. 1768 Scottish Sampler by Christian Harvie.

Framed in an old, burr maple frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is very finely worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Meandering floral border.

Colours green, cream, black, red and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case. Family names and initials.

Inscriptions read, 'FAVOR IS DECEITFUL AND>BEAUTY IS VAIN BUT A WOMAN>THAT FEARETH THE LORD SHE>SHALL BE PRAISED'

and

'ADAM WHERE ART THOU'.

Signed and dated 'CHRISTIAN HARVIE MARCH THE 24 DAY 1768'.

A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,

birds, potted flowering plants,

fruit baskets, fir trees,

crowns and peacocks.

CONDITION: Good. A few small holes.

No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
