
George IV, dated 1821. 16ins by 11.75ins wide. 1821 Sampler by Sarah Bing. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.
Fixed to linen with wood and brown paper backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours green, cream, pale blue, dark brown, gold, white and black.
Verses read,
'I AM BUT YOUNG IN ART AND CANNOT SHEW
SUCH WORK AS I UNTO MY PARENTS OWE
BUT PLEASE TO SMILE UPON MY MEAN ENDEAVOUR
I'LL STRIVE TO MEND AND BE OBEDIENT EVER'
and,
'TEACH ME O LORD TO KEEP IN VIEW
THY PATTERN AND THY STEPS PURSUE
LET ALMS BESTOW'D LET KINDNESS DONE
BE WITNESS'D BY EACH RISING SUN'.

A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,
dogs,
birds,
stags,
fir trees,
hearts, crowns
and potted flowering plants.
CONDITION: Good.
No holes.
One stain.
Very minor stitch loss to the verse.
Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading.
No colour run.
Stretching is very slightly uneven.
Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
