Antique Sampler, 1813, by Sarah Brunt

George III, dated 1813. 15.5ins high by 11.5ins wide. 1813 Temple Sampler by Sarah Brunt.

Framed in an old, burr maple frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Meandering floral border.

Colours copper, white, pink, green, pale grey and pale blue.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case.

Verse reads

'In short the way to wealth if you desire it.

Is as plain as the way to market It depends

chiefly on two things industry and frugality

that is waste neither time nor money but

make the best use of both'.

Signed and dated

'Sarah Brunt aged 10 years August 30'

at the bottom and '1813' after the alphabets.

A wonderful set of motifs, including a temple,

potted flowering plants,

crowns, hearts,

fruit baskets

and lion.

CONDITION: Good.

A couple of holes to the outer edges.

A few stain specks to the outer edge.

Some stitch losses to the flower motifs

and signature.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
