
Victorian, dated 1840. 12ins high by 11ins wide. 1840 Sampler by Emma Allen. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.
Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.
The sampler is very finely worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering floral border.
Colours gold, cream, dark brown, white, greens and black.
Verse reads,
'Happy the child whose youngest years
Recieve instruction well
Who hates the sinner's path and fears
The road that leads to hell'.
Signed and dated
'Emma Allen Aged 12 Years 1840'.
A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house,
dogs,
birds,
potted flowering plants,
fruit baskets,
squirrels,
fir trees,
flowers,
butterflies
and a gentleman.
CONDITION: Very good.
One slight hole.
No stitch losses other than to the holed area and outer line on linen ground.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.
No colour run.
Stretching is very slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
