Antique Sampler, 1811, by Martha Cooke - 12 Good Rules

George III, dated 1811. 16.75ins by 16.25ins wide. 1811 'King Charles and 12 Good Rules' Sampler by Martha Cooke.

Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Floral border.

Colours black, green, brown and cream. Text which is entitled 'TWELVE GOOD RULES FOUND IN THE STUDY OF KING CHARLES THE FIRST OF BLESSED MEMORY',

reads

'Prophane no Divine Ordinances

Touch no State Matters

Urge no Healths

Pick no Quarrels

Maintain no Ill Opinions

Encourage no Vice,

Repeat no Grievances

Reveal no Secrets,

Make no Comparisons

Keep no bad Company

Make no long Meals

Lay no Wagers'.

'These Rules Observed will obtain.

Thy Peace and Everlasting Gain.'

Signed and dated 'MARTHA COOKE Aged 8 years & 8 months 1811'.

A scattering of motifs, including, potted flowering plants.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A few small holes.

A few patchy stains.

Some stitch losses to the signature and verse.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
