Framed in an old, gilt over wood frame, with rippled, old glass.
Fixed to linen with chipboard backing.
The sampler is finely worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours browns, cream, blue, red, pale blue, white, greens and black.
Verse reads
'Reason's whole pleasure, all the joys of sense
Lie in three words, health, peace, and competence
But health consists with temperance alone
And peace, O virtue peace is all thy own'.
Signed and dated
'Mary Skirrow Octbr 8th 1821'.
A good set of motifs, including a castle,
fir trees,
stags
and a spaniel.
CONDITION: Generally Good.
A few holes.
A few pale patchy stains
and some dark stain specks.
One stitch loss to the border.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.
No colour run.
Neatly and evenly stretched.
Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound.
