Antique Sampler, 1810, by Hannah Gay

George III, dated 1810. 17.25ins by 12.5ins wide. 1810 Sampler by Hannah Gay. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked very finely, in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours browns, cream, olive green and grey.

Verse reads


'The Lofs of Gold is Great,

The Lofs of Time is more,

The Lofs of Jesus Christ,

Is fuch Lofs as nothing,

can Reftore'.


Signed and dated 'Hannah Gay Work th? in the 12th Year of her Age and in the Year of our Lord 1810'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including a church, lions, dogs, birds, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, crowns, hearts, Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk and windmills.

CONDITION: Generally Good. One small hole to the bottom left corner.

Some loss of ground to the bottom right corner.

A few pale stains, and some dark patchy staining.

Stitch losses to the border, verse, the signature, and motifs.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
