
Victorian, dated 1844. 20.25ins by 17.25ins wide. 1844,'Faithful Friend' Verse sampler by Elizabeth Cliff.
Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with board backing.
The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk-like thread on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Colours orange, cream, blue, pink, olive green and brown. Family initials.
Verse reads,
'Long may you live and happy
may you be blest with content
ment and from missfortuen
free may peace and plenty
you each hour attend and
life be seetend with a faith
full frend'.
Signed and dated 'Elizabeth.Cliff 1844'.
A scene in the middle with a gentleman on his knees (shooting a bow and arrow?)
and a scattering of motifs, including swans,
flowers,
fruit baskets, potted flowering plants
and birds.
CONDITION: Good. A few small holes and one repair.
A couple of small dark stain specks.
Minor, light patchy staining.
No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
