Antique Sampler, 1839 by Harriott Simpson. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye. Meandering strawberry border.

Colours greens, cream, pale blue, browns and gold.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-10.

Verse reads

'If I am right o teach my heart

still in the right to stay

If I am wrong thy grace impart

To find that better way'.

Signed and dated 'Harriott Simpson Aged 9 Years February 25 1839'.

A good set of motifs, some finely detailed, including two houses with a field containing sheep and deer between them, lions, dogs, birds, flowers, insects, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, squirrels, crowns, hearts, two follies flying a flag and owls.

CONDITION: Good. A number of small holes.

No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.

Minor stitch losses to motifs and to the holed areas.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
