Large Staffordshire hen on nest tureen
Victorian, circa 1860. 9.3ins high, 12.6ins wide, 8.3ins depth.
Staffordshire egg tureen and cover which features a hen sitting with her eggs, on a basketweave oval base.
Multi-coloured version.
Decorated 'in the round' - decoration to front and reverse.
Condition
Cover: Generally good. Large flake to rim on interior.
Bruise to rim.
Some paint losses to the ground and hen's markings.
KILN EFFECTS: notable crazing;
slightly stained crazing in places.
RESTORATION. Remodelled beak.
Retouched paint losses to feathers, wattle and comb.
Stabilised and retouched crack to rim.
Filled chip to rim.
Nest: Fair. No restoration. Chip to foot rim and chips around flange.
Some large flakes to the interior and the underside.
Wear to rim and foot rim.
KILN EFFECTS: kiln detritus caught in the glaze to the flange;
notable crazing;
staining to interior and underside.
