Mafra Portuguese Palissy Majolica ewer which features a lizard forming the handle, cover with a toad on top and a stand.
Colouration: green, brown, ochre, are predominant.
The piece bears maker's marks for the Mafra pottery.
Cover: Good. Some small flakes to shredded clay and to the under rim.
KILN EFFECTS: a few specks of kiln detritus caught in the glaze to the toad's nose;
flecks of stray coloured glaze to the ground.
RESTORATION. Retouched flake to eyebrow.
Ewer: Good. Some small flakes to shredded clay and frog's right eye.
KILN EFFECTS: over glazed shrinkage lines to the lizard.
RESTORATION. Remodelled horn to beetle and missing leg on two beetles.
Retouched flake to newt's tail.
Stand: Good. No Restoration. Some small flakes to ground.
Small flake to foot rim.
