
Victorian, circa 1876. 6.3ins high, 4ins wide, 4ins depth. Wedgwood Argenta Majolica tobacco jar and cover which features pictorial panels to the sides of Sir Walter Raleigh.
An inscription around the rim reads, 'TOBACCO INTRODUCED BY SIR WALTER RALEIGH 1582'.
The piece also has the original 'compressor' inside. Colouration: brown, cream, pink, are predominant.
The piece bears maker's marks for the Wedgwood pottery. Marks include a factory specific date cipher for the year 1876.
CONDITION: Jar: Generally good. RESTORATION: four stabilised and retouched hairlines to rim;
retouched flakes to rim and exterior.
Cover: Good. Flake to knop.
