
William IV, dated 1834. 17ins high by 13ins wide. Antique Sampler, stitched in 1834, by Catherine Hawkins.
Framed in a modern wood frame with glass. Fixed to chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours greens, cream, blue, copper, dark brown and gold.
Verse reads
'Caroline Hawkins is my name
and with my needle I work the same
and in my sampler you may see
what care my parents took of me'.
Dated 'Aged 11 Years 1834'.
A very good set of motifs, including a shepherd,
stars,
dogs,
birds,
flowers,
potted flowering plants,
rabbits,
fruit baskets,
squirrels,
trees,
hearts, peacocks,
owls
and stags.
CONDITION: Generally good. A number of small holes.
No stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven and a little loose, leaving wrinkling of the backing.
Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
