Victorian, dated 1844. 15.75 by 13.75ins wide. 1844 Sampler by Ann Riddell.

Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours greens, browns and cream.

Family initials.

Verse entitled

'On The Sabbath'

reads

'Ev'ry thought should be directed

Heavenward through this hallow'd day

Worldly themes should be rejected

Themes that draw the soul away

Tis the day of sacred rest

Tis the day the Lord has blest'.

Signed and dated 'Ann Riddell. 1844'.

A good set of motifs, including a castle,

birds,

flowers, fruit baskets,

fir trees, blossoming trees, a stag

and potted flowering plants.

 

Condition

CONDITION: Good.

A number of small holes.

No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.

Minor stitch losses to the castle fence.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

The silks bright and glossy.

No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
