Antique Sampler, 1840, Large squirrel motif, by C.A.D Singer.

Victorian, dated 1840. 23.25ins by 11.75ins wide. Antique 1840 Sampler with a large squirrel motif, by C.A.D Singer.

Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with wood backing.

The sampler is worked in a silk-like thread and ribbon on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border. Colours greens, cream, red, navy blue, pink, browns and gold.

Inscription reads 'Virtue alone can caufe content.'

Signed and dated '1840 C.A.D. Singer. Aged 11.

A wonderful set of motifs, including squirrels, stars, dogs, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, crosses, a boy playing with a hoop, church, butterflies, cottage with smoking chimneys, angels with crowns and a beehive with bees.

CONDITION: Good. A few small holes.

Tacks visible around the extreme edges.

Some patchy staining.

Minor stitch losses to the motifs.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Unevenly stretched. Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
