
Victorian, dated 1850. 18.25ins by 13ins wide. 1850 Silkwork sampler by Ann Davies. Framed in a Victorian wooden frame with gilt slip and old glass.
Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours greens, cream, white, black, pink, red and browns.
Verses read,
'Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy
youth. While the evil days come not. Nor the
years draw nigh. When thou shalt say. I have
no pleasure in them';
'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom
and the knowledge of the Holy is understanding.';
and
'Honour thy Father and thy Mother that the days
may belong in the land which the Lord thy God
giveth thee.'
Signed and dated, 'Ann.Davies.March the 7.1850 Aged 12 Years.'
A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a peacock perched on a fence,
crowns, hearts,
potted flowering plants
and colourful birds perched on sprigs of flowers.
CONDITION: Good. A few holes.
A number of stain specks.
Some stitch losses to the motifs.
Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
