
William IV, dated 1832. 15.25ins by 12.75ins wide. 1832 Ship Sampler by Jane Cormick.
Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with glass.
Tacked to wood with board backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering floral border.
Colours green, cream, pale blue, brown and black. Alphabets A-Z in lower case and numbers 1-20.
Verse entitled 'A WISH' reads
'May God who reigns enthroned on high
In that bright world above the sky
In tender pity conde scend
To be my father and my friend
To be lamb in Jesu's fold
I'd covet more than mines of gold
For earth with all her gaudy toys
Can neer afford such lasting joys
Soon I must quit this vale of woe
And close my eyes on all below
Then may my happy sqirit (sic) rise
To join the chorus of the skies'.
Signed and dated 'Jane Cormick Age 11 years 1832'.
A good set of motifs, including a sailing ship, stars,
birds,
flowers, fruit baskets and butterflies.
CONDITION: Good. A few small holes.
No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.
Very slight colour run around the black threads.
Unevenly stretched.
Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound.
