Antique Sampler, 1845, stitched by Mary Gibbins

Victorian, dated 1845. 16.25ins by 12.25ins wide. 1845 Sampler by Mary Gibbins.

Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass.

Fixed to wood.

The sampler is worked in fine silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours green, cream, gold, black, brown and pink.

Verse reads

'Be this my earliest care.

To Jesus throne to fly

And in my youth that reason fair.

To meet the fate of all, prepare,

Since death may now be nigh.'.

Signed and dated 'Mary Gibbins Aged 10 Years 1845'.

A good set of motifs, including angels, birds,

potted flowering plants,

fruit baskets,

squirrels, fir trees,

trees, a crown,

butterflies and flags.

CONDITION: Generally Good. Two small holes.

Some patchy staining.

No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Unevenly stretched.

Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
