Antique Sampler, 1813, 'St Cecilia's Hymn' by Betsy Steeds

George III, dated 1813. 16.25ins by 12ins wide. 1813 Sampler by Betsy Steeds. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Floral border. Colours black, cream, yellow, pink, orange, pale blue and greens.

Verse entitled

'St CECILIA'S HYMN.' reads,

'OH! Born of a Virgin, moft lowly and meek.

Thou, sent of thy father, loft creatures to seek:

Vouchfafe, in the manner that pleaseth thee beft,

To kindle thy love in my virginal breaft.

Let the words of my mouth, and the thoughts of my heart,

Obey the fweet force which thy grace shall impart;

Whilft Angles assift me to offer my Vows

To the God of my lefe, my Redeemer and Spoufe.

My life I efteem, O Creator divine.

As a loving impression out-flowing from thine;

As an act of thy bounty, that gives us a part

Of the Light, Love, and Glory, my God, which thou art

May I always as little thy pleasure oppose.

As the pure, simply Nature from whence I arose;

And by thee, and for thee, created, fulfil

In thought, word, and deed, thy adorable Will.

By this blessed Will, howsoever made known.

With a dutiful joy will I govern my own;

And deaf to all tempting inchantments of sin,

I will hearken to thee, my Redeemer within.

Thy words will I ponder by night and by day,

And the light of thy gospel fhall mark out my way;

CONDITION: Good. A few holes.

One patchy stain and a few stain specks.

Some stitch losses to the verse and to the holed areas.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
