Antique Sampler, 1836 by Ann Gording. Very finely worked

William IV, dated 1836. 19ins high by 12.5ins wide. 1836 Motif Sampler by Ann Gording. Framed in an old maple frame with rippled, old glass.

Fixed to card with brown paper backing.

The sampler is very finely worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours gold, cream, blue, yellow, black, pink, browns and greens. Signed and dated 'Ann Gording Age 14 Years 1836'.

A wonderful set of motifs, some very finely embroidered, including a stag,

dogs,

birds,

flowers, potted flowering plants,

a squirrel,

trees, crown,

a cat,

a peacock,

butterflies

and a snail.

CONDITION: Very Good. Two tiny holes.

One patchy stain and uniform age darkening of the ground.

No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. Very slight colour run around a couple of the leaves.

Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
