George III, circa 1800. 14ins by 17.5ins wide. Georgian Silkwork Embroidery Picture of Elijah and the Ravens, with painted details. Framed in an old, probably original, gilded, gesso frame with rippled, old glass.
The embroidery is worked in silk on a canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Handpainted details include the sky and Elijah's face, hands and feet. Colours greys, light brown, dark brown, gold, greens and cream. Religious subject to the picture of Elijah and the Ravens.
CONDITION: Generally good. No holes. A few tiny dirt specks and one slight, pale patchy stain.
No stitch losses. Colours are mostly good and strong. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing some wear. Splits to the front. Some chips to the plaster coating. But is structurally stable and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
