Pair Staffordshire Lord Byron & Maid of Athens figures
Victorian, circa 1860. Tallest is 6.9ins high, 3.5ins wide, 2.4ins depth. Pair of Staffordshire figures with a theatrical and literary theme which feature Lord Byron and the Maid of Athens,
seated on a rectangular base.
Multi-coloured with underglaze blue version. Dull gilt base line and embellishment.
Decorated 'in the round' - decoration to front and reverse.
Vent hole to the underside.
This piece represents The poet Lord Byron and the character of his poem 'The Maid of Athens' .
During his tour of Europe in Athens he met Theresa Marci who inspired him to write this poem.

CONDITION: Male: Good. No restoration.
A few minor paint losses to hair,
boots and foot stool.
Some rubbing to gilt.
KILN EFFECTS: slightly stained crazing to front and underside.
Female: Good. No restoration.
A few paint losses to ribbon,
foot stool and book.
Some rubbing to gilt.
KILN EFFECTS: a speck of kiln detritus caught in the glaze to the reverse;
stray speck of cobalt glaze to her nose.
