1843 Small alphabet Sampler by Jane Rice

Victorian, dated Aug 10th 1843. 7.5ins by 7ins wide. 1843 alphabet Sampler by Jane Rice. Framed in a modern wood frame with glass.

Loose mounted over card with brown paper backing.

The sampler is worked in a cotton-like thread on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Simple embroidered border.

Worked in black thread throughout.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-18.

Inscription reads

'In vain doth earthly bliss afford

A momentary shade:

It rises like the prophets gourd

And withers o'er my head.'

Signed and dated

'Jane Rice Finished this Sampler Aug 10th 1843 Aged 9 years'.

CONDITION: Good.

A few small holes.

No stains.

No stitch losses.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
