1834 Motif Sampler by Mary Ann Belchamber

William IV, dated 1834. 14ins high by 13ins wide.

1834 Motif Sampler by Mary Ann Belchamber. Framed in a modern wood frame with glass.

Stitched to linen with mountcard surround and card and brown paper backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours: greens, cream, gold, blues and browns. Verse reads

'All you my Friends who now expect to see

A piece of work that is performed by me

Cast but A smile on this my mean endeavour

I'll strive to mend and be obedient ever'.

Signed and dated 'Mary Ann Belchamber Finish'd this piece In the 11th Year of her Age March 3rd 1834'.

A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,

birds, fruit baskets, fir trees,

flowers, potted flowering plants and a dog

CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes.

A few pale stain specks.

No stitch losses other than to some of the holed areas. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

Colour run around the green threads.

Unevenly stretched.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
