1823 'Epitaph on a Hermit' Sampler by Sally Hunt

George IV, dated 1823. 12.5ins high by 13ins wide. 1823 'Epitaph on a Hermit' Sampler by Sally Hunt. Framed in a modern gold frame with card mount and glass.

Loose mounted with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours red, cream, pale blue, light brown, white, black, greens and olive green.

Verse entitled

'EPITAPH ON A HERMIT Written by a Lady'

Verse reads

' For Years upon a Mountain's brow

A Hermit Liv'd the Lord knows How

A Robe of sackcloth he did bare

And got his Food the lord knows where

Hardships, and Penance were his lot

He osten pray'd the lord knows What

At last this Holy man did die,

He left this World the Lord knows Why

He's buried in this Gloom'y den

And he shall rise the Lord knows When'.

Signed and dated 'Sally Hunt 1823'.

A good set of motifs, including potted flowering plants, flowers, fruit baskets, fir trees, flowering trees and birds.

CONDITION: Good. One hole.

A few pale stain specks to the top right corner.

Very minor stitch loss to the verse.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
