1787 Sampler by Ann Bradshaw

George III, dated 1787. 17ins by 12.75ins wide. 1787 Sampler by Ann Bradshaw. Framed in an old wood frame with glass.

Tacked to linen with linen backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral strawberry border. Colours pink, green, copper, gold, white, pink, blue and cream.

Verse reads

'You whofe fond Wifhes do to Heaven afpire

Who make thofe bleft Abodes your fole Defire

If you are Wife and hope that Blifs to gain

Ufe well your Time live not an Hour in vain

Let not the Morrow your vain Thoughts emply

But think this Day the laft you fhall enjoy'.

Signed and dated 'Ann Bradshaw her work finish'd November the 11 1787'.

A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a garden, dogs, birds, angels, flowers, potted flowering plants, stags, fruit baskets, fir trees, cows and butterflies.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes, some of which have been tidily repaired/stitched over.

No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.

Unevenly stretched.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
