1827 Sampler by Martha Ashort. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.
Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Cross linked chain border.
Colours red, cream, white, pink, orange, gold and black.
Verse entitled 'Honesty' reads,
'Convince the world that you are just and true
Be just in all you say and all you do
Whatever be your birth your sure to be
A Man of the first Magnitude to me'.
Signed and dated 'Martha Ashort Work Aged 8 1827 Liverpool'. Placename 'Liverpool' is a city in England.
A good set of motifs, including a two houses with gardens, potted flowering plants,
trees, laden with fruit, fir trees,
hearts, fruit baskets and flowers.
CONDITION: Generally Good. No holes. A few patchy stains.
Some stitch losses to the signature, verse,
motifs, border and divider lines.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
