1836 Memorial Sampler by Louisa Horsey

William IV, dated 1836. 18.5ins high by 12.25ins wide.

1836 Memorial Sampler by Louisa Horsey. Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wood frame with with gilt slip and rippled, old glass.

Tacked and glued to a wood stretcher frame with brown paper backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours greens, yellow, navy blue, black, gold and browns. Inscriptions read

'HENRY HORSEY DIED FEBY 16 1826'

second Inscription entitiled 'The Children of Robert and Martha Horsey'

Louisa Elizabeth Horsey born May 17 1823

Henry Horsey born december 7 1824

and Verse titled 'On the Death of an Infant' reads

'Sweet babe by death's cold hand in earliest bloom...

Torn from thy mother's bosom to the tomb:...

While o'er thy grave thy drooping parents bend;

Oh! May these parents hear a faithful friend!

Nor think thee only born but to bequeath....

Pain at thy birth, and sorrow at thy death:...

For when the great eternal day shall come;....

Then shall they meet thee at thy happeiest home;

And see their first dear pledge of mutual love

Blooming in spotless innocence above......'.

Signed and dated 'Louise Horsey Dec'er21 AD 1836'.

A good set of motifs, including a shepherd and shepherdess, an urn,

stars, dogs, birds,

rabbits, fir trees, trees,

crowns, a lady and a gentleman, insects and angels.

CONDITION: Good. A few small holes.

A number of pale stains.

No stitch losses. A small piece of detritus caught under the glass.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing wear and chips,

but structurally sound.
