
George IV, dated 1829. 15ins by 12ins wide. 1829 Adam & Eve Sampler by Hannah Legg. Framed in an old maple frame with rippled, old glass.
Stitched over a wood stretcher frame with paper backing.
The sampler is worked in a silk-like thread on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Strawberry border.
Colours greens, cream, copper, gold, blues and browns.
Inscription reads
'Be faithful
Unto Death
And I will
give you A
Crown of
Life'.
Signed and dated
'Hannah Legg Her Work 1829'.
A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a picket fence and garden,
birds,
flowers,
potted flowering plants,
fruit baskets,
fir trees,
angels holding crowns
and Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk.
CONDITION: Good.
A few holes.
A few patchy stains and uniform age darkening of the backing canvas.
Minor stitch losses to the border,
motifs
and signature.
Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading.
No colour run.
The sampler is overframed at the top and bottom.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound.
