1838 'Times of sickness' Sampler by Ruth Lodges. Framed in a modern wood frame with glass.
Fixed to card with chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours gold, pale blue, white, black, pink, cream and greens. Verse reads
'Times of sickness times of health
Times of penury and wealth
times of trial and of grief
Times of triumph and relief'.
Signed and dated 'Ruth Lodges work in the year 1838'.
A wonderful set of motifs, including a church, stars, dogs,
a variety of birds, potted flowering plants, trees, laden with fruit,
rabbits, fruit baskets, sailing ship, butterfly and Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk.
CONDITION: Generally good. A few holes.
A few patchy stains.
Some stitch losses to the border.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.
Colour run around the black threads.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
