1781 House Sampler by Anne Hicks. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.
Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours red, cream, pale blue, light brown, dark brown, copper, gold, pink, greens and black.
Verse reads
'During the time of life allotted me grant me Good God
my Health and liberty I beG no more if more thou art pleas'd
to Give Ill thankfully the OverPluf receive'.
Signed and dated 'ANN HICKS JUNE th 22 WC 1781 SC'.
A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a garden, dogs, birds,
flowers, potted flowering plants,
trees, laden with fruit, stags,
fruit baskets, squirrels,
fir trees, crowns,
a girl and a jester and angels also the name 'JAIN WHITEAR'
CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes.
A few uniform, patchy stains.
Some stitch losses to the border,
divider lines,
the verse and motifs.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
