c.1840 Sampler by Keziah Sarah Pilgrim

George IV, dated 18??. 15ins high by 12.5ins wide. Circa 1840 Sampler by Keziah Sarah Pilgrim. Framed in an old maple frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours greens, blue, white, black, copper and cream.

Verse reads

'Our life is never at a stand

Tis like a fading flower

Death which is always near at hand

Comes nearer every hour

 

And those who now are young and gay

Like roses in their bloom

Will very soon be old and gray

and wither in the tomb'.

Signed and dated

'Keziah Sarah Pilgrim Aged 8 Years 18??'.

A good set of motifs, including birds,

stars,

potted flowering plants,

trees, laden with fruit,

fruit baskets,

flowers,

diamonds

and dogs.

CONDITION: Good.

A number of holes.

No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.

Minor stitch losses to the holed areas

and to the date.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

Very slight colour run around some of the green threads.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
