
George III, dated 1819. 16.5ins by 12.5ins wide. 1819 Sampler by Lucy Dance.
Framed in an old, possibly original, Hogarth frame with glass. Fixed to linen with board and brown paper backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral strawberry border.
Colours greens, cream, red, gold, black, browns and blues.
Verse reads
'Remember now thy Creator in the days of
thy youth while the evil days come not, nor
the years draw nigh when thou shalt say
I have no please in them. Fear God and
keep his commandments for this is the
whole duty of man.'
Signed and dated 'Lucy Dance marked this Sampler in the elevnth year of her age. Nottingham. A.D. 1819.' Nottingham is a town in England.
A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a large eagle,
a house with a garden,
birds,
flowers,
potted flowering plants,
fruit baskets,
squirrels,
fir trees, crowns, a butterfly
and peacocks.
CONDITION: Good. A number of small holes.
A few stain specks.
No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound.
