1805 Sampler by Sarah Walker with Verse on Ants

George III, dated 1805. 21ins by 12.25ins wide.

1805 Sampler by Sarah Walker. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours greens, cream, light brown, gold, black, pink, red and blues.

Verse entitled 'THE.ANTS' reads

'Ants in Battalia to their Cells convey

The plunder'd Forage of their yellow Prey;

The little Drudges trot about, and fweat,

But will not ftrait devour all that they get;

For in their Mouths we fee them carry home

A Stock for Winter which they know muft come.'


Verse entitled 'FRIENDSHIP' reads

'Tell me.ye knowing and difcerning few.

Where I may find a Friend both firm and true,

Who dares ftand by me when in deep Diftrefs,

And then his Love and Friendship moft exprefs.'.

Signed and dated 'Sarah Walker April 30 1805'.

A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including birds, potted flowering plants, a crown,

fruit baskets and flowers.

CONDITION: Good. No holes. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.

No stitch losses. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.

No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
