1826 House Sampler by Mary Ann Smith

George IV, dated 1926. 16.25ins by 12ins wide.

1826 Sampler by Mary Ann Smith. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours greens, blue, black, pink, browns and cream.

Verse reads

'Let every youth, with cautious breast,

Allurement's fatal dangers shun,

Who turns sage counsel to a jest,

Takes the sure road to be undone.'.

Signed and dated 'Mary Ann Smith Aged 8 yrs May 1st 1826'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including a house, birds, angels,

potted flowering plants, squirrels, crowns, dogs and fleurs-de-lis.

CONDITION: Generally good. A number of small holes.

A stain line along the top edge.

Uniform age darkening of the ground.

Stitch losses to the border, signature and motifs.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
