1783 'My Mother' Verse Sampler by Charlotte Fencock

George III, dated 1783. 16.25ins by 8.5ins wide.

1783 Sampler by Charlotte Fencock. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering leafy border.

Colours greens, cream, yellow, black, pink, browns and pale blue. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-10.

Verse reads

'My Mother hitherto hath

Done her beft to make me

a work woman as well

as the Reft'.


Signed and dated 'Charlotte Fencock Finished this work 1783'.

A scattering of motifs, including crowns, birds,

potted flowering plants, trees, laden with fruit,

stags, fir trees, insects and a lion.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A few holes.

A few pale stain specks.

Some stitch losses to the divider lines,

motifs and letters/numbers.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.

Colour run around some of the green threads.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
