George III, dated 1820. 6.25ins high by 12.25ins wide. Circa 1820 ' Time' Sampler by Elizabeth Drews. Framed in an old, gilt frame with glass.

Fixed to linen with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in fine silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours pink, cream, blue, copper, white, black, gold and green.

Verse entitled

'TIME'

reads

'The moments fly-a minute's gone!

The minutes fly-an hour is run!

The day is fled -the night is here!

Thus flies a week-a month-a year.'

'A year-alas! How soon it's past;

Who knows but this may be my last!

A few short years, how soon they're fled,

And we are number'd with the dead.'

A wonderful set of small and finely stitched motifs, including fruit baskets,

owls,

dogs,

birds,

houses,

flowers,

stags,

fir trees,

potted flowering plants,

diamonds,

hearts and crowns.

CONDITION: Good.

A few repaired holes.

No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.

Some stitch loss to the date.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound.
