1831 Sampler by Elizabeth Johnson. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.
Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours greens, cream, red, yellow, gold, pink, blues and browns. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case.
Verse reads
'Religion should my thoughts engage,
Amidst my youthful bloom,
Twill fit me for declining age
And for the awful tomb.
Preserve me from the snares of sin
Through my remaining days;
And in me let each virtue shine
To my Redeemers praise.'.
Signed and dated 'This I have done for you to see The care my parents took of me Elizabeth Johnson March 3rd 1831'.
A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including fruit trees, birds, fir trees,
crowns, fruit baskets and butterflies.
CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of small holes.
No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground. Minor stitch losses to the border,
letters and motifs.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
