George III, dated 1792. 13ins by 12.75ins wide & 12.5ins by 12.5ins wide. Pair 1792 & 1803 Sister Samplers by Mary and Elizabeth Green. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Tacked to wood.

The samplers are worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Embroidered border.

Colours browns, cream, gold, white, pinks, greens and blues. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-9.

Identical verses read 'At the Nativity of Christ our Lord

The Angels did rejoice with one Accord

Let Christians imitate them here on Earth

And keep this Feast with Joy and civil Mirth'.

Elizabeth misspelt 'civil' as 'civial'.

Signed and dated

'Mary Green Finished this September the 6 1792' & 'Elizabeth Green Finished this January 1803'.

A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including potted flowering plants,

fruit basket,

hearts, diamond shapes,

darning panels,

fir trees,

stars,

flying insects,

flower garlands tied with ribbon and birds.

CONDITION: Good. A few holes.

Some pale stain specks.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

Colours are slightly faded but still well defined.

No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frames showing some wear, but are structurally sound.
