
Victorian, dated 1846. 15.5ins by 11.5ins wide. 1846 Sampler by Louisa Freeman.
Framed in an old 'molded composition over wood' frame with rippled, old glass. Fixed to card with wood backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering floral border.
Colours dark brown, cream, gold and greens.
Verse entitled 'Wisdom' reads
'WISDOM' reads'Wisdom divine who tells the price
of wisdoms costly merchandise
Wisdom to silver we prefer
And gold is dross compared to her'.
Signed and dated 'Louisa Freeman Aged 13 Years 1846'.
A good set of motifs, including a small house with a garden entitled 'Mill Cottage',
birds,
flowers,
unidentified animals
trees, laden with fruit,
cockerels
and butterflies.
CONDITION: Generally good. A few small holes and two repairs to the backing linen.
No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.
No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.
Some colours are faded.
Very slight colour run around some of the dark brown threads.
Unevenly stretched.
Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound.
