
George IV, dated 1829. 11.25ins by 14.5ins wide. 1829 Sampler by Grace Whiteley. Framed in an old 'molded composition over wood' frame with rippled, old glass.
Loose mounted over pink satin-like material and card backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering leafy border.
Colours greens, cream, black, browns and blue.
Inscription reads,
'A PRESENT FOR ELLEN'.
Signed and dated
'GRACE WHITELEY WORK AGED 15 1829'.
A wonderful set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,
birds,
flowers,
potted flowering plants,
trees, laden with fruit,
squirrels,
angels
and a lady and a gentleman wearing traditional dress.
CONDITION: Good.
A few small holes.
Some pale stain specks.
No stitch losses.
Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading.
The silks bright and glossy.
No colour run.
Unevenly stretched.
Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound.
