1805 Peacock Sampler by Priscilla Cooper

George III, dated April 2 1805. 16ins by 12.5ins wide. 1805 Peacock Sampler by Priscilla Cooper. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Greek key border.

Colours pinks, red, yellow, pale blue, black, purple, browns and greens.

Inscriptions read

'Grant me, O Lord,

A willing mind to reading

And to work inclin'd my; parents

Then will gladly see that

I can quite industrious be.'

and

'As none can truly life enjoy

Who do not well their time employ

May we in earnest all unite

To make improvement

Our delight'.

Signed and dated 'Priscilla Cooper Her Work Aged 8 April 2 1805'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including peacocks, birds, potted flowering plants, fir trees, blossoming trees, butterflies and trees.

 

CONDITION: Good.

A number of small holes.

A few pale stain specks

and a patchy stain to the top.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

The silks bright and glossy.

No colour run.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
