Majolica Palissy snake & lizard wall plate

Victorian, circa 1891. 10.3ins high, 10.3ins wide, 2.8ins depth. Jose Francisco de Sousa Portuguese Palissy Majolica wall plate which features a snake and lizard attacking a frog.



Colouration: green, ochre, brown, are predominant.



The piece bears maker's marks for the Jose Francisco de Sousa pottery.

Condition

CONDITION: Good. Chip to the foot rim.



Small chip to the beetle's pincer.



Some small flakes to the shredded clay.









KILN EFFECTS: shrinkage crack to the lizard's hind, left leg;



a few specks of kiln detritus caught in the glaze to the front and reverse.















RESTORATION: retouched flakes to shredded clay, frog's nose, and to snake's and lizard's left eye;











filled chips to moth's wing and shredded clay.
