Staffordshire Pearlware Falstaff figure
pre-Victorian, circa 1820. 9.1ins high, 5.1ins wide, 3.5ins depth. Staffordshire pearlware figure with a theatrical and literary theme which features Falstaff holding a shield and a sword, stood on a square base. Multi-coloured version. Painted base line. Decorated 'in the round' - decoration to front and reverse.
Vent hole to the underside.
This piece represents This piece represents Falstaff, the character from the Shakespearean comedy "The Merry Wives of Windsor". Maker's marks painted to the underside. Book reference,'Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875' Book 1, by A.& N. Harding, page 290.
Condition
Good.
Small chip to reverse base edge
and chips to two of the flowers.
Some flakes to hat plumage,
top of base,
rim of shield
and handle to sword.
Slight wear to front of shield.
KILN EFFECTS: shrinkage crack to the front of the base;
over glazed bruise to the lower front edge
and back corner of base.
RESTORATION. Retouching to paint losses to boots,
belt,
hat
and buttons.
Remodelled hilt to sword
and sword is a replacement.
