Pair Staffordshire Pearlware Antony & Cleopatra figures
pre-Victorian, circa 1820. Tallest is 8.1ins high, 12.6ins wide, 3.9ins depth. Pair of Staffordshire pearlware figures with a theatrical and literary theme which feature Mark Antony and Cleopatra, recumbent on a shaped base. Multi-coloured version.
Decorated 'in the round' - decoration to front and reverse.
Open bottomed.
This piece represents the play 'Antony and Cleopatra' by William Shakespeare. It is based on real events of ancient times, a tragedy and also a story of passionate love. It tells the story of an affair between Mark Antony, one of the three who rule Rome after the assassination of Julius Caesar, and Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. Book reference not found.
Condition
Antony: Generally good. Small flake to his middle finger on his left hand.
Slight wear to his right hand.
KILN EFFECTS: a few specks of kiln detritus caught in the glaze to the base.
RESTORATION: Retouched paint losses to the ground,
shoes,
sword handle,
his tunic
and hair.
Retouched flakes to his left sleeve,
his toe on his left foot
and to his shawl at the reverse.
Cleopatra: Fair. Flakes to base rim
and the hem and edge of her dress.
KILN EFFECTS: a few specks of kiln detritus caught in the glaze to the base.
RESTORATION: Right arm reglued and join retouched.
Stabilised and retouched hairline to her shawl and head at reverse.
Filled chip to her nose and thumb.
