Staffordshire 'Flight to Egypt' spill vase

Victorian, circa 1860. 9.6ins high, 5.9ins wide, 3ins depth. Staffordshire spill vase with a religious theme which features Joseph leading a donkey carrying Mary
and the baby Jesus, stood on a shaped base.



Multi-coloured with underglaze blue version. Dull gilt embellishment.







Decorated mainly to the front.



This piece represents the flight to Egypt, and is based on a similar pre-Victorian figure.

Maker's marks painted to the underside.

Condition

CONDITION: Good.

Small paint loss to donkey's reins.



Some rubbing to gilt.



KILN EFFECTS: tiny glaze pops to the green ground on the spill and base;







stained shrinkage lines to the base at reverse;



small shrinkage cracks to the reverse, ground behind donkey's front legs and the right side.



RESTORATION: Retouched paint losses to green ground on spill and base,





Joseph's orange cape,



moustache



and stick,



Mary and Jesus' hair



and black markings to donkey.
